GST registration is mandatory for most businesses in India. This comprehensive guide walks you through the entire process, from determining if you need to register to receiving your GSTIN.
When is GST Registration Mandatory?
Every business with turnover exceeding Rs. 40 lakhs (Rs. 20 lakhs for services) must register for GST. However, certain businesses must register regardless of turnover: those selling on ecommerce platforms, interstate suppliers, casual taxable persons, and non-resident taxable persons.
Even below the threshold, voluntary registration offers benefits. Input tax credit becomes available, and customers prefer registered suppliers for GST credit. Many businesses register voluntarily to appear more established and professional.
Documents Required for GST Registration
The documentation varies by business type. Proprietors need PAN card, Aadhaar, bank account details, and address proof. Partners in LLPs require partnership deed, PAN cards of partners, and address proof of the firm.
Companies must provide Certificate of Incorporation, PAN of the company, Memorandum of Association, Articles of Association, and details of directors including PAN and Aadhaar. All documents must be self-attested and submitted in PDF format with file size under 10 MB each.
The Registration Process
Begin at the GST portal (gst.gov.in) by clicking Register > New Registration. Fill in PAN, mobile number, and email address to receive OTP verification. The mobile number must be linked to Aadhaar for e-KYC authentication.
After OTP verification, receive Temporary Reference Number (TRN). Use this TRN within 15 days to complete Part B of the application, which includes business details, principal place of business, details of stakeholders, and document uploads. Submit and verify with DSC or e-signature.
After Submission
GST officials may request additional information or clarification within 3 working days of submission. An officer typically approves or rejects registration within 30 days. On approval, receive GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) and registration certificate.
The entire process takes 3-7 working days for straightforward applications. Complex cases involving verification or additional documents may take longer. Track application status using the ARN (Application Reference Number) provided after submission.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Incorrect PAN details cause immediate rejection. Ensure the PAN name matches exactly with other documents. Bank account details must match the name on PAN—the account should belong to the business or proprietor.
Multiple registrations under the same PAN for different states is permissible, but each state requires separate applications. Avoid claiming input tax credit on purchases made before the GST registration date—this is a common compliance error.
GST Registration Fees
Government does not charge any fee for GST registration. Third-party services charge Rs. 500-3000 for handling the process. We recommend using the free government portal directly or consulting a CA for complex applications.
